Full summer schedule. The Bernina Express runs up to 3 daily departures in each direction. Red Train runs roughly hourly. This is the high season — book reservations weeks in advance.

Winter 2026 · 26 Oct – 12 Dec

29 October – 13 November 2026: Vereina re-route

During these 16 days, Bernina Express trains 951 and 952 are diverted via the Vereina rail tunnel. They still run with the panorama coaches and at-seat service, but they skip the southern Bernina Pass — Lago Bianco, the Brusio Spiral Viaduct, Alp Grüm — which is the headline scenery of the line. RhB sells these journeys at a reduced price.

What to do if your dates fall in this window

If you can move your trip one week earlier or later, do — you will get the full scenic route. If you cannot move, accept the reduced experience and the reduced fare. If you specifically want the Bernina Pass scenery, switch to the Red Train (Trenino Rosso) for the Tirano ↔ St. Moritz section, which is not re-routed.

Tirano → Lugano (Bernina Express bus)

RhB runs one daily bus between Tirano and Lugano from early May to late October 2026, as a connecting service for travellers continuing south of the Bernina line. About 3 h 10 each way. Mandatory reservation. Not part of the train timetable.

About the 2026 timetable

How often does the Bernina Express run?
In summer 2026 (2 May to 25 October), up to 3 daily departures in each direction on the Chur ↔ Tirano route, plus extra short-section services Tirano ↔ St. Moritz. In winter (26 October to 12 December and again from mid-December to early May), a reduced schedule of typically 1 to 2 daily departures.
What changes during the Vereina re-route?
From 29 October to 13 November 2026, BEX 951 and 952 are diverted via the Vereina tunnel and skip the scenic Bernina Pass. You still get the panorama train and at-seat service, but you miss the headline section of the journey. RhB reduces ticket prices for the affected trains during this window.
Where can I check the live departure times for my day?
The official Rhätische Bahn timetable at rhb.ch is the authoritative source — it reflects real-time delays, weather closures and engineering works that this static page cannot. Use it for the day of travel.
Is the timetable the same all year?
No. Both trains run year-round, but the Bernina Express schedule shrinks in winter (fewer daily departures, no early-morning runs). The Red Train schedule changes very little — you can plan on roughly hourly departures all year.
Does the Red Train run on Sundays and public holidays?
Yes — the Red Train operates 7 days a week including public holidays. The hourly cadence is unchanged. Bernina Express runs every day too in summer, with the small variations of a Sunday/holiday schedule in winter.
